His favorite movies were the ones involving the fight scenes between his hero and a particular baddie. He even took up boxing to "imitate" his hero. Name the two western on-screen fighters? CowboyPal Trivia for May 15, 2008 From: CowboyPal Author Arthur McClure and Ken Jones of "Heroes, Heavies and Sagebrush" in their book they also wrote bio-shorts of most of our B-Western stars. This hero, born in Spain in 1904, a western star (to be) later in his youth became a Brazilian merchant marine captain. Later a portrait painter in New York after jumping ship (can you spell "illegal alien"). He then traveled to Hollywood to try his hand at acting. His first majer role was in MGM production "Bridge of San Lus Rey", then the classic "Trader Horn". He then moved to different studios settled at Republic Pictures. He finished his acting career in a TV series that is still in syndication in some European countries. Name him? (Some biographers say he was born in Romania or Mexico) From: CowboyPal After landing in detention because of his alien status. Eleanor Roosevelt was familiar with some of the potraits of Renaldo and recommended to her husband President Franklin D. Roosevel that he be pardoned. Renaldo did indeed receive a Presidential pardon. He was fabulous with collectors and knew the power of an autograph. His attitude was reflected in a handwritten letter to a famous boxer.1941. “It pleases me more than any power of mine can express to feel that any of my efforts on the screen helped to influence the youth...I am mailing you an autograph of mine in hopes that it may in some slight degree express my deep appreciation.” He had been a Shakespearean actor on Broadway. The thought of a respectable stage actor going into “flicker” films was considered a bad career move, yet his pay rose from $75 per week to $10,000 per week as a Western Star. His popularity suffered from a paternity suit ultimately dismissed in court. He left a legacy and a significant supply of autographed memorabilia. He frequently signed his books. Name him? By the time he was a teenager, he was working as a stunt double and extra in silent films, a vocation he continued while he attended college at Pomona. After college, he gained acting experience onstage and continued appearing in silent films, usually in bit parts. His breakthrough role came in a starring vehicle for Douglas Fairbanks Jr; this was followed by a meatier role in Cecil B. DeMille's Dynamite (1929). In 1930, he was put under contract by RKO Radio Pictures, and the studio cast him in a string of big-budget films. Later in his career, he was under contract to Paramount and Universal-International. Re: CowboyPal Trivia for May 9, 2008 From: Mel Ugel Sent: Friday, May 09, 2008 8:42 AM Scuttlebutt is that the 'Fuzzy' nickname occurred during the Fred Scott singing westerns at Spectrum in the 1930s --- apparently, they were trying to hire 'Fuzzy' Knight, but something happened and Al St. John was brought in for sidekick duties ... and he was given, or began using, the nickname of 'Fuzzy' at that time. Another bit of scuttlebutt about 'Fuzzy' --- supposedly, when Buster Crabbe was getting ready to do his CAPTAIN GALLANT OF THE FOREIGN LEGION TVer, he wanted 'Fuzzy' St. John as his helper ... but somehow, 'Fuzzy' Knight got the call. Re: CowboyPal Trivia for May 2, 2008 From: Mel Ugel Sent: Friday, May 02, 2008 11:42 AM Julie Adams was born Betty Adams in Iowa in October 1926. After spending her formative years in Arkansas, she moved to California and worked as a secretary while taking acting lessons and trying to break into films. Her hard work paid off when she was given her first part, a small role in Paramount's Red Hot and Blue (1949), which she followed up with a series of seven quickie westerns produced by Lippert and starring James Ellison and Russell Hayden. By 1951, Adams had landed a contract with Universal; whereas she had used her real name in her previous films, Universal changed her name to Julia Adams. Later in the 1950s, her billing changed again, to Julie Adams. Universal wasted little time in motivating its publicity department to build up the beautiful actress. I have written to Encore Westerns about the recent lack of B-Westerns on that service. The newer stuff is just not this viewers cup of tea and the B-westerns are sorely missed. If it wasn't for The Rifleman, Big Valley, Bat Masterson and Gene Autry I'd surely drop them. They are the only source or were, for B-Westerns; hope the lack of B-westerns is a temporary thing on Encore. Hope others will contact them and complain too.
