George O'Brien was not only a western hero but a national hero!  He had a long and storied relationship with the United States Navy and Navy Reserves. What conflicts was he involved in during the 20th century?
Western Movie Question?

Ran across your website while trying to find the title of a western I saw around 1972 with an unusual fight scene...One of the character's has a leather pocket/cup on the top of his boot which he drops either stones or a metal ball into and flings it at the bad guy...I originally thought it was a Charles Bronson/James Coburn played character but it could even be Terrence Hill. Any help would be appreciated, (have been looking for some time)...

His first Western of note came in a Warner Brothers'film.
With war clouds hanging over much of Europe and Asia, this cowboy became one of the first Hollywood actors to enter the service, joining the Naval Reserves and receiving a commission. Following flight training and a year as an instructor, he was thrust immediately in the Pacific air war, flying an F6F Hellcat off the carrier, the USS Essex. He would go on to fly 57 missions, shooting down seven Japanese aircraft, making him one of the early American aces of the war. Of the 57 missions he flew, three of his Hellcats were so full of holes when he returned to his carrier, they were rendered "unfit for duty" and dumped overboard.  Name the cowboy and the title of the movie.  Also, what year was this movie made?

Bert DeWayne Morris (Wayne Morris) (1914-1959) suffered a fatal heart attack while visiting the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard in Oakland, California.  Truly a WWII hero, he received four distinguished flying crosses and two air medals.  His westerns are considered the last of the b-westerns.

One of his most memorable roles was in Bonnie and C lyde (1967) as 'Texas Ranger' Frank Hamer, the handcuffed hostage of the duo, who spits in Bonnie's  face after she coyly poses with him for a camera shot. He settled easily into hillbilly/mountain men types in his later years and became a household face.Could this be Denver Pyle?

I have a question for you the chestnut (sorry sorrel) horse with four white legs and blaze that Tris Coffin rides in 26 Men is remarkably like one of the Champions, that Gene Autry rode so was wondering if it was a double used in movies or the tv show. As horses are my speciality i saw a lot of similarities in this horse to Gene's although i did not see a belly patch on this horse but then again it was also not rearing which Champion does with Gene. I am just curious, i know that the shows are all black and white but that does not stop me from wondering.  Do you know of any people downunder (America) that I could mayhaps correspond with.

The Lone Ranger originated on WXYZ radio in Detroit in 1933. Created by George W. Trendle and written by Frank Striker, the show became so popular it was one of the reasons why several stations linked together to share programming on what became the Mutual Broadcasting System. Aimed primarily at the children's audience, The Lone Ranger made a successful transition to ABC television in 1949. Several characteristics were unique and central to the premise of this western, and the initial episode which explained the legend was occasionally repeated so young viewers would under-stand how the hero gained his name and why he wore a mask. The Lone Ranger was one of six Texas Rangers who were ambushed while chasing a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. After the battle, one "lone ranger" survived, and was discovered by Tonto, a Native American who recognized the survi-vor as John Reid, the man who had saved his life earlier. Tonto thereafter referred to the ranger as "kemo sabe," which is trans-lated as "trusty scout." After Tonto helped him regain his strength, the ranger vowed to hide his identity from Cavendish and to dedicate his life to "making the West a decent place to live." He and Tonto dug an extra grave to fool Cavendish into believing all six rangers had died, and the ranger donned a mask to protect his identity as the single surviving ranger. Only Tonto knows who he is ... the Lone Ranger. After he and Tonto saved a silver-white stallion from being gored by a buffalo, they nursed the horse back to health and set him free. The horse followed them and the Lone Ranger decided to adopt him and give him the name Silver. Shortly thereafter, the Lone Ranger and Tonto encountered a man who, it turns out, has been set up to take the blame for murders committed by Cavendish. They estab-lished him as caretaker in an abandoned silver mine, where he produced silver bullets for the Lone Ranger. Ev-en after the Cavendish gang was captured, the Lone Ranger decided to keep his identity a secret. Near the end of this and many future episodes, someone asks about the identity of the masked man. The typical response: "I don't rightly know his real name, but I've heard him called... the Lone Ranger."

From: Carol Austin

Most literary critics say UNDER THE VOLCANO by Malcolm Lowry  is the major novel of the 20th century. Lowry was English but spent time in America and Hollywood because he loved movies. In the late 30s, after visiting Hollywood, he began his book in Mexico.
Question: what connection does Malcolm Lowry and his book have to "B" westerns?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for August 20, 2008
Answer:  in Hollywood Lowry met Marjorie Bonner around 1935 and fell in love. They married a few years later and she helped him prepare his book for publication. Marjorie Bonner and her sister Priscilla both made silent movies and early sound movies. Marjorie was in TRAIL OF COURAGE(1928) with Bob Steele and Priscilla Bonner was in 3 BAD MEN with George O'Brien. Her last appearance was as an extra in the saloon scenes in MELODY RANCH with Gene Autry.  I wonder if Bob and Gene ever read UNDER THE VOLCANO

His film and TV career not only won him public-name recognition but also helped establish his enduring "good-guy" reputation. A few of his roles in non-western movies included men of questionable character, but in Westerns he usually played the brave and wholesome sheriff or cowboy who killed the outlaws, saved the school marm, and brought justice to the Wild West. Though it is difficult to estimate exactly how important such positive roles in his career, his "white hat" movie image, helped to make this one time western star so famous.

Perhaps you can indentify a B-western for me. It was one a Johnny Mack Universal western and it has something to do with with brother and sister bringing in a herd of cattle. There is a long horseback chase with Johnny and the brother chasing after someone. As the camera tracks ago, there are sections of fence and other structures that go by. The finale takes place at night during a thunderstorm with the cattle stampeding. Does this sound familiar? If you know the title, please let me know. Many thanks.)
(Many thanks.  (Perhaps it was one of Kirby Grant's early Universal westerns.)

Boderland is the correct answer and was Hoppy's longest flick (remove the word 'titled') .that precedes longest and it makes sense.  Borderland was, also, the longest running western made - 82 minutes.
Sorry about the confusion re. Johnny Mack's movie.

That would be the Medal of Honor recipient Audie Leon Murphy (1924 - 1971) the son of a poor Texas share cropper.  An Audie Murphy Day is held each year in Greenville, Texas usually in June around his birthday.

The WWII hero, Audie Murphy, would be the answer.  He might have been short, but I sure enjoyed his westerns.

The model for the "tail's" side of the coin was a buffalo named Black Diamond, a resident of New York's Bronx Zoo. He was born of stock donated by the Barnum and Bailey circus. In his prime, Black Diamond's coat was unusually dark, and he weighed more than 1500 pounds. Soon after production of Buffalo nickels began, the design was modified. "The early coins" showed the bison standing on a grassy mound. For the 'new' version, engraver Charles Barber cut away the base of the mound to make a straight line. He also lowered the words Five Cents so the rim would protect them from wear.
Collectors noticed right away that the inscription was clearer.

He wasn't destined to become a cowboy star. Born far from the Western plains and prairie in the Bronx, New York (actually on 116th Street), the son of a New York City judge and the president of a sewing machine company, he attended Hamilton Military Academy or Institute (sources differ, but it was a military style prep school). After graduation he was apparently offered an appointment to West Point, which he turned down in favor of attending law school at NYU and following in his father's footsteps. But a boating accident in the cold waters of Long Island Sound at the age of 21 resulted in a severe case of pneumonia, and caused him to give up the pursuit of law, temporarily, at least.  Name this famous cowboy.

In the Republic serial besides the fact there were five Lone Rangers "The Lone Ranger" (1938), Nsme the five Lone Rangers. The ranger cries "Hi-Yo Silver, Away". Who did the yell?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for August 6, 2008.
From: Cow0boyPal
The five rangers were Lee Powell, George Letz later named George Montgomery, Bruce Bennett previously known as Herman Brix, Hal Taliaferro previously known as Wally Wales and Lane Chandler previously known as Robert Oakes.
When the Lone Ranger calls out 'Hi Yo Silver, Away' it is the voice of Earle W. Graser, the radio's Lone Ranger that is heard and not the voice of either Lee Powell or Billy Bletcher. His recording of this signature cry was used even after his death and Brace Beemer had become the Lone Ranger.
