Dear Mr. Konnyu
- I just visited your web site on the Sons of the Pioneers in hopes of
finding a song they did many, many years ago. The song was "Trees"
(by Joyce Kilmer). I am positive they did the song some 60 years
ago, but without finding it in all of my searches, I feel like my age is
truly showing!
Did they actually
do this song (or am I losing my mind) and if so, have you any idea how
I could get it.
Thanks so much for

Ran across your
website while trying to find a movie I saw on TV as a kid while living
in Los Angeles during the late 50's to mid-60's (I was born in Bryan but
followed my dad around during his baseball career and we all eventually
ended back up in Texas . . . sisters in San Antonio, my parents back in
Bryan [Mom's hometown], and I'm in Kingsville [wife's an English prof at
A&M-Kingsivlle). Anyway, I can't remember the name, of course.
What I do remember is there being a group of Confederate soldiers (ex-
or prisoners or ex-prisoners) involved with a USA cavalry troop in the
Southwest. The Indians are after them, the Confederates opt to try
to lead them away so the others (including a woman, of course) can escape.
Just when it looks like the Rebs might outride/outrun the Indians, they
find themselves in a box canon with nowhere to go. They turn, face
the oncoming Indian hordes, unfurl the Stars and Bars, and charge suicidally
into the Indians. As a kid proud of his Texas and Southern heritage,
it reduced me to tears. I've looked and looked, but haven't been
able to nail it down. Thought "Cavalry Charge" or "Escape from Fort
Bravo" might have been it, but I have those now . . . and am still looking.
My latest possibilities are "Two Flags West" and a CBS-TV remake (1957)
entitled "The Still Trumpet." If you've got any clue, or a suggestion
who I might contact, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks for your
time and effort.

A group of US cavalry

In order to save their lives, they bargain with the Indians and convince
them that the official looking document is a treaty with the government.
The Indians let the cavalry go when they are given the document.

Hi! Hope you
can help. A cowboy movie in the mid 50's to 63'. It came
out and I watched it as a boy about 12 years of age. It was about
a young boy hiding in a ranch by the horse water troughs, hiding because
at dusk cowboys came into his ranch shooting and killing every there but
him. He remembered all those on a horse shooting his family and workers
on the ranch. He grows up practicing hard and long with a gun shooting
targets and drawing from the holster. He grows up and find all those
who shot his family and workers. I saw it when movies were 50 cents
and offered a double feature. The other movie with it was Godzilla
or the Flying large dinosaur birds. Can you help me locate this western.

The mystery cowboys
for today is none other than Al "Fuzzy" St John (1893-1963), sidekick to
many western heroes, on the left and the "silvery-voiced buckaroo", Fred
Leedom Scott (1902-1992) with the fancy shirt on the right. Both
Fred and Fuzzy passed away due to heart attacks, Fuzzy in 1963 and Fred
in 1992. Fred's movies were very enjoyable, but I always thought,
as others did, his voice was too operatic for westerns. After all,
what can you expect from a opera trained singer?

Today’s mystery
cowboys are singing cowboy Fred Scott on the right, and on the left is
his sidekick, Al “Fuzzy” St. John. Fuzzy, Smiley Burnette and Gabby
Hayes were my favorites among the many sidekicks. Even though he
had a very good voice, Fred Scott did not sound like a singing cowboy,
like Gene or Roy.

But, I would like
to enter a guess---Tim McCoy-- (in an undercover disguise) I think the
man on the right is Ethan Laidlaw (1899-1963) but I have no idea about
who the man in the sombrero is.

I believe the mystery
cowboys are Jack Perrin and Ethan Laidlaw. The scene would be from
Jack's movie "Rainbow Riders" (1934) and the lady would be either Virginia
Brown Faire or Grace Woods, not sure. Jack's movie career lasted
until the late 1950's or early 1960's. He passed away in 1967 at
the age of 71 from a heart attack.

Mystery cowboys
are I Standford Jolley and Dave "Tex" O'Brien, who starred in the Texas
Ranger series for PRC. I Standford Jolley was a very versatile actor,
acting in westerns, serials, dramatic movies, and TV, usually on the wrong
side of the law. Jolley died in 1978. Dave also was versatile
in show business in that he was not only an actor, but also a director,
writer, stuntman, and guest on many TV shows. He also was a writer
for the Red Skelton Television Show and was a regular on the Pete Smith
Speciality shorts. Dave died from a heart attack in 1969.
