Oklahoma Cowboy Hall of Fame
From: Dan Hale
Subject: Re Johnny Mack Brown and the OK Cowboy H of F - Cynthia
Western Historian, writer researcher, Bobby Copeland wrote that the Oklahoma Cowboy Hall of Fame selections will be coming up in April and that now would be a good time for those who have the time and desire to write a note to Lynda Haller @ 1700 N.E. 63rd St Oklahoma City OK 73111 and let her know that it is time to see JMB in their Hall I think their website is www.cowboyhalloffame.org if you want to see who they have previously inducted.  They have a first class museum and it would be wonderfull to have Dad in their ranks.

Message sent Lynda Haller at the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Greetings, It is almost time to select another person for induction to the Hall. I am resending a letter which I sent to you last year.
Bobby Copeland
Johnny Mack Brown may be more deserving of the Hall of Fame induction than perhaps anyone now in the Hall.

He starred in over 100 Western movies (only one person, Charles Starrett, starred in more. AND, he also is not in the Hall).
He had a Hollywood career than spanned some 38 years (1927 - 1965). In his early years, he worked with such Hollywood greats as Mae West, Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, and John Wayne.
He has long had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He was among the Top-ten ranked cowboy movie stars for 11 years.
He is in the Gun-Spinning Hall of Fame.
He is in the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame.
He was the recipient of the Golden Boot Award.
He has a film festival named in his honor.
He was an All-American football player at the University of Alabama.
He is in the University of Alabama Hall of Fame.
He was selected to the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
He was a cowboy hero to millions of youths.
For many years, he was featured in the “Johnny Mack Brown” comic books.
His name is instant recognizable to Western movie fans.
He was beloved by everyone with whom he worked.
During WWII, he made many personal appearances to raise money for War Bonds – he also visited hospitals to see injured G.I.’s.
After his career, to the delight of his fans, he made many personal appearances.
Unlike most Hollywood personalities, he remained married to the same woman.
He has been the subject of at least three books, and is featured in many other books and articles.
Is there anyone now in the Hall that measures up to the great Johnny Mack Brown?

In the 50's my brother and I used to occasionally see a cowboy named Shamrock Allison on TV in the Chicago area.  He had a pardner named Lucky.  The background music was always just an organ.  I've never had anyone other than us remember these movies. They seemed to be  one on a very small budget, but definitely on film and not like a soap opera.  I remember them being repeated and shown on the same shows that showed the other cowboy movies of Republic pictures etc.   Does anyone remember anything about Shamrock Allison?  I may be wrong   about this, but Don Defore, who played a neighbor of Ozzie and Harriot's may have played the part of Lucky.  I was very young at the time and the face is a bit fuzzy in my memory.

Shamrock (James Ellison) and Lucky (Russell Hayden) did appear together in a series of six westerns.  All  six were made and released in 1950 by Lippert Studios. They were not very good in story lines or production values. Check with Imdb for more info.  Look under
James ELLISON, (not Allison) and/or Russell Hayden. These two actors were most well known for their respective roles as Hopalong Cassidy side-kicks.

Movie called "Snowfire"

Hi, I am trying to find the movie called "Snowfire". It is about 2 little girls that had lost their mother. The youngest said that she could talk to this white wild stallion and that he talked back to her and they understood each other. They lived on a ranch with their father. I think I had seen it in the late 1950's or early 1960's. The father had a mustache but I don't know who played him. I have seen him in other westerns I think. If you can tell me where I can get this movie I would really like to have it but have had no luck in finding it. Thanks for any help you can give me. Diana Allen

The film "Snowfire", though not currently available, is now owned by Warner Communications following a number of Copyright transfers and assignments since it was originally copyright in 1958. Interestingly after the last transfer (to Warner Communications) a juvenile book "Snowfire: The White Stallion" a 78 page novelization based on the film's screenplay by the McGowans, was published in 2003. This may indicate an interest in the film but the economics of restoring a film shot on the fairly unstable Eastmancolor (the image tended to go red with age) would depend upon how large an audience they felt it would reach. If you are interested in the copyright history of the film Joe can give you my address. Larry Hopper

Can’t believe how many people knew the Gail Davis/Annie Oakley question.  A star goes to the person who knows the other two leading characters from the Annie Oakley TV Show.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jack Luden is the answer for the minor cowboy star who died in prison - not Spade Cooley.
Cooley was granted a 72-hour parole to perform at a policeman's benefit. After receiving a standing ovation, Spade retired to the wings where he dropped dead of a heart attack.

convicted for the murder of his wife.  He died of a heart attack in 1969.

Leading lady Sheila Ryan married Gene’s TV sidekick, Pat Buttram in 1952.  The marriage lasted until her death in 1975.  In 1945 Sheila married Allan ‘Rocky’ Lane.  This marriage was not as successful.  It lasted about 3 months.
