Mac
Hedges "Last Buckaroo" Back in Print
Your support of
my Western Music Network launch in 2002/2003 was much appreciated. Unfortunately,
we could not find a large enough audience to sustain the economics of keeping
it up and running. I continue in my efforts to promote the heritage of
Western Culture, and am pleased to announce that I have partnered with
Mac Hedges to bring back to the publishing world.
Mac's wonderful
novel, "Last Buckaroo."
The story of bringing
Last Buckaroo back to print is documented on our website www.lastbuckaroo.com.
I hope you will consider telling your Internet audience about the return
of this book. Gibbs Smith, the original publisher did not do much, so there
are many that have never even had the chance to read it. Our friend and
buckaroo, Mac Hedges, is more than willing to spin an interview, and probably
throw in a new story or two. Mac's e-mail is last-buckaroo@sbcglobal.net.
Many Thanks
Bob Sigman

few perplexed people around who still remember his greatest blunder, when
he played a corpse on live tv and suddenly walked out of the coffin, in
the middle of a broadcast, thinking the scene had ended. The detective
went on and solved the murder, never explaining why the corpse had suddenly

One possible answer
to your question is Robert Kent (1908-1955) in the 1946 serial "The Phantom

avenging Indian spirit who thwarts the baddies efforts to make life harder
for a group of reservation Indians.

Tarzan was never
played by a man...He was a horse!!!!
Now, that that's
over with, I believe you are speaking of Herman Brix (Bruce Bennett). The
film in question, "The New Adventures Of Tarzan" was released as both a
serial and a feature. More footage from this was released as "Tarzan And
The Green Goddess". Brix/Bennett later went on to star in "The Lone
Ranger' and "Land Of Fighting Men" among others. But, wait!-There are other
Tarzan/Cowboy links! The first movie Tarzan ("Tarzan Of The Apes") was
Elmo Lincoln, a former Arkansas peace officer. D.W. Griffith became quite
"impressed' by him when his short was torn during the filming of "Battle
Of Elderbush Gulch". In true movieland style, Louisiana stood in for Africa.
Lincoln later ended his career at $55 a day in Charles Starrett westerns.

I believe you are
speaking of Eugene Oliver Edgar Stutenroth, but we know him better as Gene
Roth. In Los Angeles, on July 19, 1976, he was struck by a hit and run
driver. Not only did he play baddies, but he is affectionately known to
us as the spy Bortsch in the Three Srooges short, "Dunked In the
Deep". Apparently not satisfied with this singular effort, he reprised
the role in yet another Stooges short, "Commotion On The Ocean". Also,
fifties movie fans think we watch "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" to see
Yvette Vickers, but the real reason is to enjoy Gene Roth's portrayal of
Sheriff Kovis!

I was wondering
if you could help me with the answer to a question I've had trouble finding
- How many Durango Kid movies were made? I know there was more than one
actor to play Durango, but so far, I've not been able to find out how many
all together were made. If you know, I'd really appreciate the answer.
Thank you for your
time.

To Rachel Ford:
Once more, I must
bow to the "master", Boyd Magers, for this information. (His mind is much
more reliable than mine!) Charles Starrett made 131 B-Westerns for Columbia
between 1935 and 1952. Of these, an UNPRECENDENTED (64) were DURANGO KID
movies. Not all of them had been released to DVD or TV over the years.
Again, according to Boyd Magers, the final one in the series, THE KID FROM
BROKEN GUN was recently televised on TCM, and I could kick myself for missing
it! This one, especially, is one fans have been long awaiting! Incidentally,
though the name "Durango" or "Durango Kid" may have been used in some movies
or tv shows, including a 1999 movie, DURANGO KIDS, the Charles Starrett
westerns are the ones referred to as the DURANGO KID series. He always
played the DURANGO KID, but his "secret identities" always changed, though
it is a joke among fans that most of the time he played a "Steve" something
or other.

Rachel;
There were 65 Durango
Kid films starring Charles Starrett.
The first was "The
Durango Kid" in August of 1940. Then there was nothing until after
the war when "The Return of the Durango Kid" in 1945 kicked off the continuous
series. It should be noted that though there were 65 releases many
of the later films were made up of shortened earlier pictures with new
continuity wraps added. The last Durango Kid film was "The Kid From
Broken Gun" which was copyright August 18, 1952.

He could also pitch a mean game. He was in around 70 films between 1936

be surprised to learn his partner was actually one of a set of triplets.
His son became a great stuntman. Name this man and his partner. Extra points

Ironic…The final
chapter of "The Indians Are Coming", Chapter 12, was entitled “The
Trail’s End”. Historically, this was “The Trail’s Beginning” as it revived
interest in what many felt was an entertainment that would soon die away.
This was the first time a serial was given such legitimate treatment, and
much of its success can be attributed to the fact that it featured all
sound as opposed to those films which linked the silent era to the sound
era which were mainly silent with a bit of sound “thrown in”. If not for
“The Indians Are Coming”, we may never have enjoyed such a legacy of serial
features

As the question
regarding Pancho drifted off into the Radio version, those comments seemed
incorrect. My memory from the mid-1940s in Los Angeles was, "The
part of the Cisco Kid was played by Jack Mather; Pancho, by Harry Lang."
The show was sponsored by Weber's Bread.
This interesting
snippet from http://ciscokid.libsyn.com/
offering Cisco Kid radio podcasts:
"The Cisco Kid came
to radio October 2, 1942, with Jackson Beck in the title role and Louis
Sorin as Pancho. With Vicki Vola and Bryna Raeburn in supporting roles
and Michael Rye announcing, this series continued on Mutual until 1945.
It was followed by another Mutual series in 1946, starring Jack Mather
and Harry Lang, who continued to head the cast in the syndicated radio
series of more than 600 episodes from 1947 to 1956." I'm guessing the Jackson
Beck 'Cisco', which I've never heard, came out of New York, while the Mather
version originated in L.A Please note, I do not now, nor have I ever,
had any personal or financial interest in the website cited above

His claim to fame
was that he didn't driver a Beemer...he preferred a Mercedes Benz.
Seriously, he was
the announcer for the Lone Ranger show before he began to play the Lone
Ranger. Also, after the ranger rode into the sunset, Beemer played the
role of Sgt. Preston, in Challenge of the Yukon, produced by the George
W. Trendle group, as was the ranger?
