I'm trying to find 2 movies for my father-in-law, Dick Jones.  They are both B westerns in 1938 that he was in.  In either VHS or DVD would be good.

1.  Land of Fighting Men ----- Monogram Pictures
starring....Jack Randall, Louise Stanley, Herman Brix, John Merton, Lane Chandler

2.  A Man to Remember ------  R K O Pictures
          starring......Ed Ellis

Any information you could give me on how to get a hold of either of these movies would be appreciated.

My Dad's recollection of his first exposure to a big screen was this Rex Allen feature. He was almost a teen, and he recalls a train coming towards the camera, where obviously the camera was on the track, and at the final moment where the train seems like it is about to come through the screen, my Dad jumped behind the seats in this old theater !
Anyways, he would really appreciate it if he somehow could find a copy somewhere - Can you help ?

Cowboy Pal, do you have any info on western actor named Theo Winn. I understand he was in some of Tom Mix's movies & sometimes was his stand in and or stunt double. Theo Winn was married to my Mother's older sister, Ethel Prewitt.Although just 68 years old. I've seen Gene Autry, and Smiley Burnette in person at the Peak St Theatre, Red River Dave at the Stevens Theatre. Both in Dallas Tx. William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy was my favorite because he reminded me of my Dad's way of dealing with people.
My Dad played guitar well and sang well. Sang alot of Gene Autry's songs as fill in rythem guitarist and singer with the "Light Crust Dougboy's"  and Bill Boyds, both Dallas local groups circa mid 30's to 50's. BUT I still liked "Hoppy" best. That's enough ramblin on.
Please advise me of any info on Theo Winn.
Thanks,
Regards,

Re Theo Winn (The following info comes from Best of the Badmen Men book by Boyd Magers, Bob Nareau and myself):
Records show he spelled his name Wynn, but he is better known to the film industry as WALLY WEST. That is the name you should be searching for. He was in many films - mostly as a stuntman  - and often uncredited. He was a rather small man and could double women and children - he even doubled Lee Aaker in the TV series, "Rin Tin Tin." He did star in one film (as Tom Wynn) called "Desert Mesa" in 1935. The film is not available. I doubt he worked with Tom Mix, but he did double Tim McCoy.
He was married to a Mary E. - perhaps she is the Ethel you mentioned. He may have been married more than once. Apparently Mary E, was previously married since he had a step-daughter.
Wynn, or Winn, or Wally West, was born in Gough, TX on Oct. 11, 1903. His mother's maiden name was Adams.
Wynn died in Los Angeles on May 16, 1984.
Go to this site and you will find a list of many of his films.

Not the other rocky lane Albertson or what ever his name is.  The Rocky Lane I am referring to has several half brothers/sisters that are interested in more info. Rockys father was Carter Ferrell who later married another women named Flossie.  Sisters would be Juanita, Ann, Linda, Sue and Bonnie, brothers Marshall, Larry, Bob and Jim.
Also where we can obtain copies of the movies he made?
Thanks in advance

Re William Donald Ferrell: This question has surfaced a couple times before - once from a relative. I regret to inform you that William Donald Ferrell was a liar and an imposter. He posed as Lane for several years after Lane's death. He even married a woman in Florida while claiming he was Lane - and told some family members he was Lane. Ferrell (about 5-9) was too short and in no way resembled Rocky Lane. Every B-western film historian knows the facts about Lane's name, birth and death. And, you can check in any B-western film book. Allan "Rocky" Lane was born Harry Leonard Albershart on September 22, 1909 in Mishawaka, Indiana. He died October 27, 1973. His parents were William Albershart and Lennie A. Dayhuff. I have Lane's birth certificate, death certificate, and a photo of his grave. HE NEVER WENT BY THE NAME FERRELL.
I have studied western performers for over 25 years, written some dozen books, many articles, and contributed to several books. I can assume that Ferrell was not Allan "Rocky" Lane, nor did he have any association with Lane. Check out the photos of Lane on the internet. Please feel free to contact if you have questions. I thought the Ferrell/Lane thing was put to rest years ago.

Lone Ranger & Tonto

Date: Mon, 01 May 2006 22:39:32 -0400
From: Anthony Pozsonyi
The Lone Ranger and Tonto stopped in the desert for the night. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes The Lone Ranger and says, "Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?"
The Lone Ranger replies, "I see millions of stars."
"What that tell you?" asked Tonto.
The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.  Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Timewise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning.  Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.  Meteorologically, It seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What's it tell you, Tonto?"
Tonto is silent for a moment, then says, "Kemo Sabe, you dumber than buffalo crap.  It means someone stole tent."

Whomever told you that Bob Mitchum was a member of the Sons of the Pioneers was a little confused.  Bob Nolan was the member they may have been thinking of.  Nolan was one of the founders of the group. Yes, Bob Mitchum has done some singing: Ballad of Thunder Road, an album of Calypso and one of the studio mixed duets with Sinatra - but he doesn't quite measure up to Bob Nolan in the western song arena.

My uncle has been trying for many years to get hold of either "The Searchers" soundtrack from 1956 or the main song called The Searchers (written by Stan Jones and performed by the Sons of the Pioneers). There is also another song called Ride Away, from the same film. Is there anythere that you know of that I can obtain these songs? It is his birthday in 2 weeks and I know he really wants them.

Any info you could provide would be gratefully appreciated.

The Western channel repeats their films many, many times.  Gene’s movies are shown every Wednesday and Sundays at 12:00 noon.

Dear Joe -
I've just discovered your site, I'm delighted!  Was searching for Clark Gable's horse ranch, was led to your site...a happy turn, as I have this vinyl recording of the first two Lone Ranger radio shows, Adventures 1 and 2, orig broadcast date Jan 30 1933, that I don't know anything about, including when this record was actually released.
There is a "hand-etched" number on each side of the record, between the label and the recording, visible in one of the photos attached, as closeup as I could manage...the jacket says Copyrighted, but there's no year...the only date listed anywhere is 1/30/33...label says Not Licensed for Broadcast...
Can you tell me just what it is that I have?
Thanks for any help you can provide, and Eeeeehaaaaa! for a great website!

You might be thinking of "The Scarlet Horseman".....a Universal Studios serial (1946).  It starred Paul Guilfoyle as the hero.

Chuck, there was a western serial, "The Scarlet Horseman", released in 1946 by Universal Pictures which starred Paul Guilfoyle and Peter Cookson.  The hero supposedly wore a scarlet mask and robe, but being in black and white, who knows.

Which cowboy (I think he was either a radio or comic book cowboy) rode a horse named Whitewind?  He would urge the horse forward by
shouting, "Scratch gravel, Whitewind!"
Which radio western character rode a horse called "Fury."
He used to shout, "Kanewha, Fury!"  I think he was an Indian.

Hi,
I have enjoyed your website for a long time and find something of interest each time I visit. Sure wish I could visit more often but that is not the
case. On a recent visit I saw a photo of a poster from Johnny Mack Brown's film Drifting Along. Do you know of a source where I could obtain a very
good copy on vhs or dvd?
I recently thought of a movie I saw many many years ago,so long I do not know how long, probably 50 years. It was a b-western or serial and all I
remember was a rider riding a pinto horse possibly wearing a cape usually at night. It wasn't Zorro Rides Again to the best of my knowledge. Any
information you may offer will be greatly appreciated. In the past you answered a very brief description of a B-western and came up with the title
Drifting Along.
Thank you for your efforts in keeping the b-westerns and their heroes alive.

What was that western film?

Hello,
I?m attempting to identify the name of a western genre film possibly of the 1960?s or 70?s.  I vaguely remember a very poignant scene with an older frontiersman or cowboy.  He was telling another character about his deceased wife and child.  It was a heart wrenching scene and it was played very well by the actor in question.  I seem to recollect the gentleman welling with sincere emotion and there may have been actual tears.  The gist of the scene was, as the years went by, he was having difficulty remembering the faces of his wife and child.  The thought of not being able to remember the faces of his departed loved ones after the passage of so many years was unbearable for him.  I had hoped I would have seen it again after so many years, but I?m still waiting for a repeat airing on television.  That's pretty much all I can recall from that movie.  If anyone can identify this film from my blurred description of that single scene, I'd be much appreciative.
My apologies for my own failing memory
 Regards,
 John

I don't believe Pat ever rode a mule in any of the movies he did with Gene Autry, and don't recall him doing so in the TV series.  The horses he rode were
pretty generic with no distictive markings. Pat did refer to his mule Dandruff in 3 or 4 episodes of Melody Ranch radio that I have.  Possibly this is
what you are thinking of.

Re name of an actor:  This may not be the actor the inquirer is thinking of since he was not retired when he died, and he did not die in a river on the west coast. but Eric Fleming of the TV series "Rawhide" came to my mind. He filmed The Glass Bottom Boat in 1965 and contracted with MGM-TV to film the two-part adventure series High Jungle in Peru. During the shooting of location shots on the Huallaga River on September 28, 1966, Fleming dove from a dug-out canoe after paddling it beyond the rapids. His body was lost in the turbulent water and was not recovered until three days later.

UTM rodeo team

February 28,  2006

Hello,
I am writing on behalf of the rodeo team at the University of Tennessee at Martin. While our student-athletes receive an excellent education, our scholarship money is limited to what we can raise.  Most of our kids come from small rural towns and need financial assistance to be able to attend college. Many will be the first in their family to do so. The lure of being a member of a team, being able to bring their horse to campus, and the encouragement of a coach to walk them through admissions is vital in giving many the courage to take the big step to leave the familiarity of home and attend college.
At UTM they will receive much more than just practice on their roping and riding skills. There is a weekly team meeting in which they learn life skills, such as goal setting, the importance of attitude, striving for excellence and overcoming obstacles, avoidance of drugs and alcohol, and the individual’s value to the team. Because of the excellence of this program, Coach Luthi has received the prestigious Rawhide Award three times for developing values and encouraging healthy lifestyles in and out of the arena.
Tuition has sky-rocketed over 110% in the past 9 years and a tuition hike is forecast for next fall.  Many of these students are discouraged about their ability to financially attend college and we have already lost some students as financial casualties. To help with this dilemma our team is hosting a scholarship auction April 8, 2006, in conjunction with the 38th Annual UTM College Rodeo.  There will be about 8,500 spectators and 250 contestants representing 32 different colleges during the 3 days of the rodeo.  Would it be possible for you to invest in the future of these student-athletes by making a donation to our scholarship auction? Anything from you would greatly enhance our auction and benefit our scholarship fund.  You may contact me at 731-881-7426 if you have any questions.  I know you must get many requests and I appreciate you considering mine.
Sincerely,
Diane Luthi

She wants to find out some information about a movie that was made around 1937 ish? She remembers being about 8 or 9 and being in a movie in Reno Nevada.. It was a cowboy movie and she thought  it might have the name Buckaroo in the title. She remembers being on a train. Later she heard as an adult they might have not released it because the children weren't in a union. She also thought the production company might be called King. So that's it. I wish I could help you more. Thanks so much for your time and expertise!!!! Take care,

Around 1966 or so, there was a ABC-TV series called "The Monroes".  It starred Michael Anderson, Jr and Barbara Hershey.  In it was an Indian sidekick named  Jim, Dirty Jim to be exact.  He was aptly portrayed by Ron Soble (1932-2002).  It also had Ben Johnson playing a one-armed rancher-cowboy named Sleeve.  Hope this is the one you are thinking of.  Good TV Series...Good question

Most likely many B-Western fans are going to know the answer to my trivia question.  Just in case, Sunset Carson, my favorite cowboy, was the movie star who was second fiddle to his sidekick Smiley Burnette, who for some reason had top billing  This was the only time this was ever done.  Imagine, Gabby Hayes having top billing in a Roy Rogers western.  No way.
