Subject: Len Slye replacement redux
My initial answer, made in haste this morning, was Lloyd Perryman.  However, further research and thought reminded me that Perryman actually replaced Tim Spencer during the year he left the group, and then stayed on for about 40 years. Pat Brady replaced Rogers.  However he was never (or  seldom) a lead vocalist ala Roy Rogers, and also served as the comic relief of the group It is, therefore, my opinion that Brady was more of an addition than a replacement. Perryman took more of Roy's chores, staying with the group after Spencer returned and Rogers left.
Is that clear as mud?

The best answer to Tumbling Tumbleweeds being a possibility is to watch, over and over, the whole restored film (available from the Autry Museum and shown periodically on Encore Westerns.  If you can spot, Roy, Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Hugh Farr and Karl Farr in the film, or on the soundtrack, please let me know exactly where this occurs.  I haven't even been able to discern them hanging around in the crowd scenes.
When in doubt - watch the picture.

Let me preface this answer by saying I would be interested in seeing your answer.  Here is mine. While Roy was still Len Slye and working with the Sons of the Pioneers he appeared with them in "The Big Show" in a sequence shot on a Hollywood sound stage but representing a building at the Texas Centennial.  The Sons of the Pioneers were actually there in June of 1936. While Roy was still Len Slye and working with the Sons of the Pioneers he appeared with them in "The Old Corral" and was bumped up to solo dialog and a brief dust-up with Gene. After signing with Republic as a solo act he was put in Wild Horse Rodeo as Dick Weston (a 3M pic) and then appeared in "The Old Barn Dance" in a brief square dance calling sequence.  He was also billed in this film as Dick Weston. NOW - The American Film Institute Catalog states that "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" was Roy's first feature film and that he appeared there with the Sons of the Pioneers.  This is absolutely false.  His first feature film with the Sons of the Pioneers was "The Old Homestead."  The confusion regarding "Tumbling Tumbleweeds, " in information supplied by the AFI's favorite reference (unidentified "modern sources") was probably founded upon two items.  1 - The use of Tumbling Tumbleweeds, a song written by Bob Nolan and performed by the Sons of the Pioneers before Gene got his hooks in it, and, 2 - the fact that parts of the film were shot near Victorville. Victorville was Roy Rogers' home in his later years but not early on. So, by my count, there are two with Roy as Len, and one with Roy as Dick.  I'm interested in the valid fourth.

The answers below are correct.

Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 27, 2007

That would be William Colt MacDonald.  The Three Mesquiteers' first book appearance was in 1933 - Law of the Forty-Fives (Covici-Freide). Two years later Beacon Pictures would film the book for States Rights distribution with only the characters of Tucson (Guinn Williams) and Stony (Al St. John) in the picture which was released December 1, 1935.  The first film featuring the Three Mesquiteers was Powdersmoke Range released in September of 1935 by RKO.  Harry Carey was Tucson, Hoot Gibson Stony and Guinn Williams was Lullaby.  He was upped to Tucson in Law of the 45s but after that Republic took over and introduced Ray Corrigan (Tucson), Bob Livingston (Stony) and Syd Saylor(Lullaby), to be replaced by Max Terhune.

Not real sure but I think Tim Holt was USMC lieutenant.  Gene Autry, although he was a pilot, was a USAAF Tech Sergeant.  He flew C-46s / C-47s in the CBI.  I've never understood why he was not a commissioned officer.  The Army Air Corps had enlisted pilots in the 1930s.  They were routinely commissioned when we entered WWII.  I don't know why Gene Autry wasn't.  Guess it doesn't matter . . . he was patriot - and an excellent role model for my generation!.

CORRECT TRIVIA ANSWER for August 1: Terry Frost said the clumsiest cowboy he ever worked with was WHIP WILSON. Jim Vecchio must have misinterpreted the question: Rocky Lane and Charlie King who were both athletic and very agile. ?

This is a complete guess, but I suppose Terry (and others) could have said that about "Rocky" Lane, who was not regarded in the best of terms by many of his co-stars. Though this is probably not the answer you sought, it could easily have been said about cowboy villain Charlie King, as well: He is the only cowboy I know of who tried to commit suicide twice and failed both times.
