This is a sneaky question from Bobby. He was kissed by Barbara Pepper in "Sagebrush

This is a reponse to John Hindsill's comments below

Ken Maynard was closer to a real cowboy in his singing talent than to the other silver screen cowboy crooners. Though I have no evidence at this time other than comparing Gene's voice with Ken's you will find he gets the short end of the stick.  Nat Levine probably thought it would be best if Ken's voice was "enhanced" so he wouldn't seem a primitive compared to Gene.
The folks at Columbia Phonograph didn't think much, or perhaps the buying public didn't, of Ken's recordings.  Only two were officially released.
THE LONE STAR TRAIL W149832 2310-D
THE COWBOY'S LAMENT W149831 2310-D

Ken Maynard, billed as The American Boy's Favorite Cowboy,
recorded the following songs on April 14, 1930.

[Listings below are as they appear on the master sheet]
 149830 Fannie Moore
 149831 Cowboy's Lament
149832 Lone Star Trail (from "Wagon Master")
 149833 Sweet Betsy From Pike
 149834 A Prisoner For Life
149835 When the Roundup's Done This Fall
 149836 Jessie James
 149837 Home on the Range

Ken has writing credits for two songs that were used in two 1933 films.  The Wheels of Destiny, from the film of the same name, and The Trail Herd from THE TRAIL DRIVE. The songs can be found in Ken Maynard's Songs of the Trails published by M M Cole in 1935.

Boy, love this site.  One never knows what is to be learned here.   Larry Hopper's answer to the above question is very full, but leads to another question:  why was Ken Maynard dubbed by Bob Nolan?  Maynard was, himself, a singer.  I have at least two cuts of him on compilations of him singing "Home on the Range" and "The Lone Star Trail".  Also, I have heard (on the Saddle Pals station on the live365.com site) several songs credited to him.---

The first FULL song Gene Autry sang on film was "Someday in Wyoming (The Wyoming Waltz)" written by Smiley Burnettee and Gene. This was in the Ken Maynard film "In Old Santa Fe." Technically the first thing he sang was a fragment of a square dance "... chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough." This was also the same square dance that Dick Weston (Roy Rogers) sang in Gene's "The Old Barn Dance." The other songs in "In Old Santa Fe" music interlude with Gene were: "Mama Don't Allow" - performed by Smiley Burnette and then "In Old Santa Fe" sung by Gene and the gathered guests. Additional trivia: Ken Maynard "sang" two songs in the film. "As Long As I Have My Dog" and "Because You Didn't Get the Girl." Both were voiced by Bob Nolan of the Sons of the Pioneers.

When The Cactus Is In Bloom
words and music by Jimmy Rodgers

Cattle prowl and the coyotes howl
Out on the Great Divide
Never done no wrong, just singin' a song
As down the trail I ride

Rattle snakes rattle at the prairie dogs
You can hear that mournful tune
'Cause it's round-up time, a-way out west
When the cactus is in bloom
Yodel...

CHORUS
Daylight comes and the cowhands yell
They call out every man
Throw my saddle on my old cow horse
I drink my coffee from a can
The sun goes down on the cattle trail
And I'm gazin' at the moon
'Cause it's round-up time, a-way out west
When the cactus is in bloom
Yodel . . .

Now we don't have cold weather
It never snows or rains
This is where the sun shines best
Out on the western plains
Some of the boys are gone away
But they will be back soon
'Cause it's round-up time, a-way out west
When the cactus is in bloom
Yodel...

CHORUS

'Little Rascals' Actor Thomas Bond Dies
Sep 25, 7:49 AM (ET)
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Thomas Ross Bond, who played Butch the bully in the "Our Gang" and "The Little Rascals" serials of the 1930s, has died. He was 79. Bond died Saturday of complications from heart disease at Northridge Hospital, said his manager, Frank Marks. Bond played a member of the Gang named Tommy. After his first year he was dropped from the cast but returned later in the role of Butch, the archenemy of Alfalfa. Bond appeared in dozens of "Our Gang" and "Little Rascals" features before outgrowing the role. Born Sept. 16, 1926 in Dallas, Bond got his start at the age of 5 when a talent scout for Hal Roach studios approached him as he was leaving a movie theater with his mother. The scout "asked him if he'd be interested in acting, (said) he had a great face and he could set up an appointment with Hal Roach in L.A.," Marks said. His grandmother drove him in what, at the time, was a rugged journey: "It was all dirt roads from Dallas to L.A," Marks said. In the 1940s, Bond played Jimmy Olsen in two Superman movies and appeared as Joey Pepper in several installments of the "Five Little Peppers" serial. In 1951, Bond quit acting and went into television directing and production work before retiring in 1991. Bond is survived by his wife, Pauline, son Thomas Ross Bond III and a grandson.

Follow up question about two Gene Autry songs
From: RMaryman
Sent: Monday, September 19, 2005 10:07 AM
Joe-
You may recall that I wrote to you about a month ago inquiring about a song that Gene Autry sang in one of his movies.
It turns out that there were two songs with a similar theme, but the tune and words are different. The first, "Good Bye Pinto" was sung in :"the Man from Music Mountain" and is a slow "lament" type song. The other is "So Long, Old Pinto" and is a slight bit more up tempo (was sung in the movie "The Old Corral" I think - otherwise it was in Oh Susanna)
What company published Gene Autry's originals, and is there any other online resource for finding out more info about these songs. I can transcribe them if push-comes-to-shove, but that takes a lot of time (and my wife gets irritated if I stop and replay and stop and replay etc etc.)
Thanks again for your help and Happy trails!

Rick;
GOOD BYE PINTO (Autry / Marvin / Rose) in "Man From Music Mountain"
was copyright by Gene in 1938 08 29 and it was not published at that
time. It may have been more recently by I am unaware of it.  Also at
that time Gene's songs were published by M M Cole of Chicago. Gene's
Western (West'rn) Publishing wasn't founded until the early '40's.

SO LONG OLD PINTO (Curt Massey) as given on a Varese-Sarabande CD
is credited to Oliver Drake by Bloom's "Hollywood Song", The AFI
Catalog of Feature Films, and in the film itself song credits are
shown for The Sons of the Pioneers, Fleming Allen and Oliver Drake.
In any case finding either a Massey or Drake sheet music will be
difficult.

Your best bet is to transcribe from the songs themselves and get it
done in a day rather than spend months looking for needles in far
flung haystacks.

Johnny Mack Brown Festival
CowboyPal Podcast from Bobby
From: Bobby Copeland
Sent: Friday, September 16, 2005 3:31 PM
The first Johnny Mack Brown Festival was held on September 8, 9 and 10, 2005, in Johnny's hometown of Dothan, Alabama. It was well planned event with lots of activities including music, informative talks, videos of Johnny playing football at Alabama, exhibit of Johnny memorabilia, a mock shootout, movies in the historic opera house, and a shooting and  gunhandling performance by sharpshooter Joe Bowman. But the highlight of the festival was the opportunity  to mingled with Johnny's children, Cynthia, Locky, and Sally, who came from her home in Norway. The fans fell in love with Brown family, who were most friendly, and were and ready and willing to answer the many questions posed to them about their famous father. The first day's activity started with the dedication of a Johnny Mack Brown historical marker at the already existing mural of Johnny on one of the buildings in downtown Dothan. Some of the other festival activities include:  A video called “Roses of Crimson”  a film produced by the Alabama Center for Public Television & Radio  was enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience. The video told story of Alabama football, focusing primarily on the 1926 Rose Bowl, and including rare footage of the game and its stars, including Johnny.  A presentation by Ken Gaddy, Director  of University of Alabama’s Bear Bryant Museum, who spoke and showed photos of Johnny and the 1926 Rose Bowl. Bobby Copeland, author of the recent book Johnny Mack Brown - Up Close and Personal, gave a talk each day on Johnny's film career.
Cynthia Brown Hale (Johnny's daughter), George Coan (publisher of The Old Cowboy Picture Show), and Bobby Copeland introduced several of the movies. There were two rooms filled with memorabilia including Johnny's Alabama letterman's sweater, and his Rose Bowl blanket. A nearby museum had on display of 45 movie posters of Johnny and other western stars loaned from the Western Art Museum from Cartersville, Georgia. The event concluded with a western hoedown at the nearby Landmark Park with music, barbeque dinner, and a Johnny Mack movie. A great time was had by all the fans. However, the lack of sales by the dealers and the small attendance was disappointing.
Plans are already under way for the event for the upcoming two years. Hopefully, it will continue. A tip of the hat goes to William Holman and has fine staff on providing a fun-filled three days for the fans of the great Johnny Mack Brown.

Most lists of a stars films do not carry the alternate titles used when they were edited and released for television showings, just like alternate titles used overseas or working titles prior to release are rarely shown.
Among the Autry films clipped and retitled are:
RED RIVER VALLEY - Man of the Frontier
SOUTH OF THE BORDER - South of Texas
GAUCHO SERENADE - Keep Rollin'
Tape distributors may possibly  feel safe in distributing the TV versions knowing that the Autry organization has ownership of the films in their complete original manifestations, but a lawyer would have to check the facts of copyright ownership and transfers. They are more involved than just looking at a listing on the Copyright site which
only lists registrations, renewals and transfers since January 1978. Some Columbia titles were changed for release in Great Britain.

Great website!  I saw your page on the Sons of the Pioneers and was wondering if you could help me locate a song of theirs.  As I recall, the song goes something like this:
This is my wish for you, with all of my heart,
May other lips that you touch, just remind you how much I love you
And though you’re gone from me, this is my prayer
If someone else breaks your heart, just remember that I still care
And when dreams come true, and your heart is free
May every dream that you dream be a dream of me
Can you help me find the album that contains this song or direct me to where I might look for it?

Also, they used to have a show in Branson, MO, but I'm not finding their show listed there anymore. We really enjoyed them and have some of their music but seeing them at a live concert is so much better.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the Lone Ranger Rock is still accessible, am planning a trip to Cal. in Oct. for the Lone Pine film festival, and was going by way of Chatsworth and was concerned to know if it was worth my while since there is so much
Development in that area. I'm basing my info on "David Rothel's book An Ambush of Ghosts",
A very very good book on the old western movie Locations.

The Lone Ranger rock is still visible from the road leading into the Iverson development area.  You used to be able to work your way down to the rock but the vegitation makes it pretty slippery.  The Garden Of the Gods is a park so you can see all those great rock formations.  On the trail up to the park you can look over to Nyoka's cliff and get a good view of the Lone Ranger rock.  If you go to Iverson's you may as well go on up the pass road to Simi Valley and visit old Corriganville.  It's about 5 miles.  It's a wildlife corridor now but you can still see the town foundations and the empty lake.  Lots of hiking trails.  Also in Simi is the Ronald Reagan Museum.

Thanks for a wonderful web page on the Silver Screen cowboy heroes...I have had a great time reading some of the info, and plan to do some more lookin 'round. I was hoping that you might be able to point me in the correct direction for finding out the lyrics to a song that Gene sang in at least 2 movies. I think that it is called "Goodbye, Pinto" (because that is the only recurring line in the song). As a horse lover, I really would like to locate this song, especially if it was ever published. Since I don't really know where to look for this type of info, I was hoping you could at least point me in the best direction.
Thanks again for a great website.

I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one. That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world. That God put firewood there but that every man must gather and light it himself. In being prepared physically, mentally and morally to fight when necessary for which is right. That a man should make the most of what equipment he has. That "This government, of the people, by the people and for the people" shall live always. That men should live by the rule of what is the best for the greatest number. That sooner or later, somewhere, somehow, we must settle with the world for what we have taken.
