According to Billy Hill's daughter Lee, Billy and Nat Vincent, of the Happy Chappies, were visiting a ranch where a roundup was in progress and saw a cowboy trampled by the stock.  The dangers of roundup were so great that many cowboys were crippled or killed and they often would say "perhaps I'm headin' for the last roundup."  Billy picked up on the phrase and had a winner when George Olsen's orchestra introduced the song in the Follies. After that the recording race was on with three different recordings being made on September 27th of 1933.  Gene Autry, the only cowboy singer of the lot, was 12th to record the song.
1933 07 11 - George Olsen & Orch (Columbia Phonograph)
1933 08 28 - Don Bestor & Orch (Victor)
1933 08 29 - Will Osborne Orch (ARC / Conqueror)

THE LAST ROUNDUP was written by Billy Hill and published in 1933.  Supposedly Billy worked on a ranch in Montana and in talking with a cowboy, asked why he liked the roundup so much in which he replied that it might be the last roundup he would make.  As it happened the cowboy was knocked from his horse the next day and trampled by the cattle.

Don Barry, born Donald Barry De Acosta on January 11, 1912.  Don starred in the 1940 Republic studio’s 'serial' The Adventures of Red Ryder.  He would then forever be known as Don “Red” Barry….The first real movie Don appeared in was with John Wayne – Wyoming Outlaw…He committed suicide on July 17, 1980 in Hollywood?

Commentary on the answers.  "This Day and Age" was listed on IMDB, a less than reliable source, but not in the American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films 1931 - 1940.  That shows his first un-credited appearance as "Flying Down to Rio" in which he was one of the mechanics. "Night Waitress" in 1936 was his first speaking part, before he was offed by the mob. Between that and "Wyoming Outlaws" in 1939 he appeared in 19 films. I would be interested in knowing what the definition of a "real film" is.

I am not for sure how to answer this question. Barry's first movie credit is "This Day and Age". That film is not a western, altho' Charles Bickford,
the star, did many westerns, including an early an early version of 'Three Godfathers'. Don Barry made (22) non-westerns before his first credit in one...it is 'Wyoming Outlaw', a John Wayne, Three Mesquiteers film.

Re: Gerald Walton's question "Who was King of the West." I believe the title was "King of the Wild West" and it was Buster Crabbe, according to the billing given him in PRC's Billy Carson series. I have several old newspaper movie ads which show this credit and also gives his horse's name as "Falcon" although I don't think Crabbe referred to the horse by name.

Answers are never simple.
The first FEATURE in which the Sons of the Pioneers appeared was The Old Homestead, which was filmed in February of 1935 but not issued until August. As a result the first theatrical appearance of the Sons of the Pioneers was in the SHORT Radio Scout released in May 1935 by Vitaphone. Interestingly The Old Homestead players list shows the four members individually at the bottom but does give credit to the Sons of the Pioneers on the song credit card.  Also when Radio Scout was issued they were five members with the addition of Karl Farr and seemed to shrink in personnel when The Old Homestead was released.

Although the Farrs were on both sessions they are not playing on all songs.  Those on which they definitely play are I DON'T BELONG IN YOUR WORLD / PANHANDLE PETE / THE OLD TRAIL / RIDE, TENDERFOOT, RIDE.
I don't have all the recordings from these sessions to verify their presence on the others but can tell you they are not heard on
IF TODAY WERE THE END OF THE WORLD.
So the basic answer is that the Farrs were on more than one recording with both Gene and Patsy even though, in
Gene's case, some  of the recordings weren't released until the 60's (P4 17079).

A little more insight re.Roy Rogers birthplace after his original birthplace in Cincinnati. According to popular lore, the site where Roy Rogers was born is now roughly that of second base at Cinergy Field. During a celebration of Rogers' 50th anniversary in show business in 1981, the Cincinnati Reds gave Rogers an autographed second base. The legend had clearly taken root.
But in that same year, 1981, Post columnist Dick Rawe wrote that a reader, Albert Lane, had been digging into Rogers' history and had called The Post to say he believed the second-base story was wrong. Rawe noted that Rogers had been as surprised as anyone about the story. Rawe enlisted two civil engineers, who pinpointed the birthplace near the middle of Second Street opposite the Crown.
The answers are in, but I thought I would add this 'little tidbit".

I have been looking in vain for a cowboy that was in one of the Three Stooges Western Shorts.  I do not remember his name but he was tall and very clumsy.  One scene put him in a calvary officers office, I think.  He also had a guitar with him and was in love with a very beautiful female in the short.  Can you help me in finding out who he was?

That was Jock O'Mahoney (1919-1989), ace stuntman and actor. The Stooges film in question was either OUT WEST (1947) or PUNCHY COWPUNCHERS (1950).  He played the same character (Elmer, The Arizona Kid) in both films.  The Stooges were Moe, Larry, and Shemp.

Originally named Lou by C.C. Henderson for his wife, the post office was established July 11, 1883. On November 22, 1883, it was renamed Dresden. The name was changed to Berwyn on September 1, 1887. Finally, on November 16, 1941, it was renamed Gene Autry to honor the singer and motion picture star, Gene Autry. Born in Texas, Autry's family had moved to Oklahoma while he was an infant. He was raised in the southern Oklahoma towns of Achille and Ravia. In 1939 he bought the 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) Flying A Ranch on the west edge of Berwyn and the town decided to honor him by changing its name. Approximately 35,000 people attended the ceremonies broadcast live from the site on Autry's Melody Ranch radio show

Listening on the car radio today they were talking about James Arness and why he walked with a limp (I never noticed that) they said he was wounded in the landing of Anzio, Italy. Then they went on to say that I believe is a false statement. That Ken Curtis (Festus) was an orginal member of the Sons of the Pioneers.
Name the orginal members of the Sons of the Pioneers?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for October 5, 2007
Well this one has its iterations, "The Sons of the Pioneers" came from the "Pioneer Trio". Leonard Slye (Roy Rogers to-be) founder (circa 1933-1934), Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer.
The "Pioneer Trio" landed as performers on the payroll of the radio station KFWB Los Angeles. The executive at the station renamed them  "The Sons of the Pioneers" cause he didn't think it made any sense, they were too young to be (pioneers). They soon added Hugh and Karl Farr. On the morning show they were called "Gold Star Rangers". On the late afternoon show they were called "The Sons of the Pioneers" guess this name just stuck.Roy said they each earned $35.00 a week.  They had their first film appearance as "Sons of the Pioneers" in 1935.

Well here's one time the book and writer and Roy all got it wrong. In his Roy Rogers book David Rothel asked Roy about his first on-screen kiss and his stated answer was Jean Porter in San Fernando Valley (1944) Here is proof of Roy kissing first Sally Payne then Gale Storm twenty seconds after in the 1942 Roy Rogers movie "Man from Cheyenne" Gaby Hayes exclaimed "There's sure a lot of kissing going on." Who's credited with naming Roy Rogers horse Trigger?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for October 1, 2007
You pick'em

Smiley Burnette and I and some others who were there got to kicking it around. I was fooling with my gun as we talked. I believe it was Smiley who said, 'As fast amd as quick as the horse is, you ought to call him Trigger. You know, quick-on-the-trigger.' I said 'That's a good name.' And I just named him Trigger."
Bobby Copeland submitted another credible answer. Director Joseph Kane flat out said it was he who named the horse. He said at the time they were looking for a name, one of the guys was fooling around with a pistol and Kane got the idea to name the steed "Trigger."

I'm going to qualify my list by excluding those who were not a film's star but sang as group backups, but will include three cowgirls.
REX ALLEN / GENE AUSTIN / GENE AUTRY / BOB BAKER / SMITH BALLEW / WARNER BAXTER / BILL BOYD / KEN CURTIS
ART DAVIS / EDDIE DEAN / JIMMIE DODD / DALE EVANS / TEX FLETCHER / DICK FORAN / JANE FRAZEE / KIRBY GRANT
DONALD GRAYSON / TITO GUIZAR / MONTE HALE / GEORGE HOUSTON / ART JARRETT / HERB JEFFRIES (JEFFREY) / JOHN "DUSTY" KING / KEN MAYNARD / RED RIVER DAVE McENERY / VAUGHN MONROE / JAMES NEWILL / DOROTHY PAGE / JACK RANDALL / TEX RITTER / ROY ROGERS / FRED SCOTT / BOB STEELE / JIMMY WAKELY / JOHN WAYNE / RAY WHITLEY / TEX WILLIAMS / BOB WILLS /

MY DEFENSES:
1 - They all played leading roles in features or shorts, not sidekicks, nor were they billed with a group but had separate billing.
2 - TEX HARDING is not listed because his voice on all occasions was dubbed by James T. "Bud" Nelson.
3 - JOHN WAYNE is listed because he did sing "Red Wing" in "In Old Oklahoma" (1943) but did not sing in his part as Singin' Sandy, or the early Republic features when Bill Bradbury and Jack Kirk did the singing. He took another stab at "Red Wing" in 1961 with Lee Marvin as part of a drunk sequence in "The Comancheros."
4 - BOB WILLS had separate billing from the Texas Playboys and had integral acting chores in addition to his singing.

For full information and great pictures I recommend you to Douglas (Ranger Doug) Green's "Singing Cowboys"

Since the operative qualifier is "entire Republic studio career" and not just
starring roles we have:
The four directors of Roy Rogers in his starring roles :
Joe Kane
William Witney
John English
Frank McDonald
to which  must be added
Joseph Santley for his guest appearance in "Brazil."
Leslie Selander for his cameo in "Out California Way"
Mack V Wright for his appearance in the Sons of the Pioneers in "The Big Show"
and George Sherman for his debut appearance as Dick Weston in "Wild Horse Rodeo."

While Gene Autry was working as a telegraph operator in Oklahoma, a man waiting at the railroad station overheard young Gene singing and playing his guitar suggested to him that he could become a radio star. Who was this famous Oklahoman?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for September 18, 2007
There are different conclusions in the answers below, I prefer the legendary answer that it was Will Rogers. In Gene Autry song folios this story was told a number of times whether the publicist was correct or knowingly prepetuated a falsehood is besides the point. This is like revisionist history and we are not in position to ask the source for clarification, Gene Autry.

According to the publicity hype that began with a newspaper story while Gene was working on "Shooting High"  Gene was offered Will Rogers' old dressing room on the 20th C Fox lot and it was then, according to the November 11, 1939 that Gene related the story of how Will had advised him to go to New York.  In that same story Gene related how it was Rogers who had got him a bit part in "Green Grow the Lilacs."  Never happened.  The only cowboy star associated with that play was Tex Ritter. Even Autry sources have said the story never happened the way it was told and retold.  Gene only learned that Rogers had been in the office when he returned from sweeping the back room and found the signed telegraph form and payment lying on the counter.
Writer Don Cusic tracked down Rogers' movements and the only story he filed from Chelsea was in May of 1928 which throws the whole story in Gene's autobiography out the window since he said he followed his advice and went to New York in September and October of 1927.  Although Holly George-Warren makes a case for Gene's trip taking place in 1928 there is no supporting documentation.

Thanks......Edd
Re: Roy Rogers last features B/W?

From: CowboyPal
Roy's contract with Republic and Yates lapsed in May 27, 1951. Roy wanted to do more Republic features and produce his own television series. Negtiations broke down with Yates after Roy sued Republic when Yates tried to sell Roy features to television. (Republic eventually won the lawsuit).
Roy's last color feature for Republic was "Trail of Robin Hood", the last of Roy Rogers features were released in B/W beginning with "Spoilers of the Plains", "Heart of the Rockies", "In Old Amarillo", "South of Caliente", and the last of Roy Rogers features for Republic was "Pals of the Golden West". Roy then did two comedy spoofs one with Paramount co-starred with Bob Hope and Jane Russell in "Son of Paleface" (1952) then a brief appearance in United Artists "Alias Jesse James" (1959). His final movie was a privately financed movie for Penland Productions "Mackintosh and T.J." (1975). Roy's television show "The Roy Rogers Show" began on NBC-TV December 30, 1951 and continued through March 1957.

Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center!

USS New York
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

The ship shown in that mail around IS  the San Diego (LPD 17) which number is barely visible in the picture. The USS New York (LPD 21) is not scheduled for launch until March 2008. The picture of the San Diego was used as "an artists rendering." to accompany the hoo-hah piece.
Here is a little bit of stuff from Wikipedia:
USS New York (LPD-21), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of New York. The ship is designed to deliver a fully-equipped battalion of 699 Marines.
Shortly after 11 September 2001, Governor of New York George E. Pataki wrote a letter to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England requesting that the Navy bestow the name USS New York on a surface warship involved in the War on Terror in honor of September 11's victims. In his letter, the Governor said he understood state names are currently reserved for submarines, but asked for special consideration so the name could be given to a surface ship. The request was approved 28 August 2002.
Oddly enough, a previous holder of the name, USS New York (BB-34), had its keel laid on September 11, 1911, exactly 90 years to the day before the WTC was attacked.

In "The Phantom Empire" the name of the lost civilization was Murania.
This was based upon the series of books by James Churchward about the lost Pacific civilization of MU in a series of books beginning in 1931
The Lost Continent of MU, The Children of MU, The Cosmic Forces of MU.  Even the Rosicrucian society had their version, with illustrations, LEMURIA: Lost Continent of the Pacific by W S Cerve.
All of this claptrap went round and round  through the mind of one of the film writers while he was under gas at the dentist and came out on the screen in the form we know so well.
