The three wives of Roy Rogers were Lucile Ascolese, 5/8/33 – 6/8/36, divorced; Arline Wilkins, 6/14/36 – until her death on 11/3/46; and of course, Dale Evans, 12/31/47 until Roy’s death on 7/6/98.

When I was a child we used to listen to a story album by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, which told the story of Pecos Bill on one side, and the flip side was the story of Johnny Appleseed.  I have searched the net trying to find this album (preferably on CD) but have been unsuccessful.  Do you know the album I am referring to (as well as any others by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers)?  If so, where can I buy them.

Bob Nareau's Passing

Sadly, I report the death of a good friend, and Bob Steele aficionado, Bob Nareau. It was Bob who bursts all the myths printed about Bob Steele. Bob doggedly researched until he discovered the such facts as Steele's real Name was Robert Adrian Bradbury - not Robert North Bradbury, Jr.;  He was born in Portland, OR. - not Pendleton; He was not a college athlete and never boxed professionally: his father's real name was Ronald E. Bradbury - not Robert North Bradbury, Sr., plus much more.
Bob wrote five books on Steele. He was a credit to the cowboy hobby, and one of the most honorable men I ever knew.

Subject: RE: Inquiry About Texas Ranger TV Show
It sounds like the gentleman is referring to the tv show called "Tales Of Texas Rangers" starring Willard Parker & Harry Lauter.  The series was produced by Screen Gems which is a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures.
There were 52 30 minute episode.  Series ran from 1955 - 1959 + syndication.  The show used to be shown on Saturdays on one of the Buffalo tv stations.

The series had a catchy theme song.

These are tales of Texas Rangers
A band of sturdy men
Always on the side of justice
They fight for the right again

That's all the lyrics I can remember.

At the beginning of the show you'd see an empty western street and then a lone Texas Ranger would appear (Willard Parker) and then (Harry Lauter) would appear, gradually they would be joined by a bunch of Texas Rangers.
One week they would go back in history and tell you a story from their files.  Willard Parker rode a palomino, Harry Lauter rode a black horse with a white blaze on its face.  The next week they would tell you a modern story.  They drove a 1955 Ford black 4 door sedan and they pulled a 2 horse trailor behind them.

At the end of the show you'd hear the theme song in the background, the Texas Rangers walking woud disperse in various directions until everyone had disappeared.  That's all that I can remember.  I watched the show regularly.

There are episodes occasionally for sale on ebay.  Possibly Richard Orsak in Victoria, Texas or Boyd Magers may have some episodes of this great tv series.  I hope I've been able to answer some of the gentleman's questions.

Sincerely:

Ron McKnight.

Out in Arizona, just south of Tombstone,
Where tumble weeds tumble in search of a home.
There's a town they call tombstone, where the brave never cry.
They live by a six gun, by a six gun they'll die.
It's been a long time now sinc the town was a boom.

Nolan's grandson has set up a great Website for fans of the Sons of the Pioneers. It's also an opportunity for them to appreciate the talent of the SOPs lead singer, Nolan, who wrote around 1,400 songs during his 72 years. The Website can be found at

What makes this site special is the section labeled Lyrics where fans can hear the music and read the lyrics from many of the songs they heard at the movies of Charles Starrett and Roy Rogers. Please alert your visitors of this new Website for Bwestern fans, especially fans of the singing cowboy movies. Nolan spent 18 years in these movies.

I am trying to track down a TV program that I used to watch as a kid on New York TV.  It was in the 1952-1956 timeframe and was a series, not a serial.  It was sort of an educational series in which a well known cowboy ( whose name I cannot recall) presented western and indian lore, indian language, customs, history, etc in a series of 15 minute clips.  I am interested in who the cowboy was and if any of that film was saved.

You're talkin' about Colonel Tim McCoy.  Sometimes he wore a cavalry outfit and often a buckskin jacket with long fringe.  He first had a show on KTLA in Los Angeles in 1950 and a couple of years later moved over to KNXT.  This was part of the CBS network and is the probably reason we got the show in NY for the little time that it was broadcast.

Actress in old western

Hi,
I'm trying to find an old western movie that has aired at least twice in the last few years on TV.  The actress in the movie goes by "Colorado" in the film.  Not sure of the premise, but there is money from a holdup hidden in an old church.."Colorado" meets up with the main character there, along with other bad guys. I love the characters, but can't for the life of me recall who's in the film.
Thanks,
Tea

Joe, could you please give me some information about Gene Autry.  My wife is writing her biography and as a child would see some of the old cowboy movies and one occasion Gene had a side show in person in Little Rock, AR for the Orphans of the Arkansas Children's Home.  Who was his side kick with the 'jeep' called Nellie Belle, Pat Buttram was in the show and on stage.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Info on Gene Autry

From: Cowboypal
The sidekick with the jeep was Roy Rogers sidekick and his name was Pat Brady and his jeep was called Nellybelle. Pat Brady appeared in all (100) episodes of the Roy Rogers Show (1951-1957)  was the comedy lead on television. Pat Brady usually played a second comedy lead in Roy Rogers movies, then first appreared with a jeep in the Roy's movie "Golden Stallion". Pat Buttram was comedy lead in most of 1950's Gene Autry movies thru 1952. In 1953 Smiley Burnette was comedy lead in Gene Autry movies  the last year Gene Autry made movies.  Pat Buttram also appeared a comedy lead on the Gene Autry Show on television in (83) of (91) episodes from 1950 to 1955.

CIMARRON (ROLL ON) was written by Johnny Bond while a member of the Jimmy Wakely Trio.  They recorded it on August 29, 1940 for Decca records (Dec 5877).
Johnny Bond, and his Red River Boys recorded it in December of 1947 for Columbia Records (Col 20502).
In the meantime the Jimmy Wakely trio performed the song three times in films.
1 - Twilight on the Trail (Par - 1941 12 03) A Hoppy picture in which the performance was recorded live during the scene.  This is an exception to the usual pre-recording of songs.
2 - Heart of the Rio Grande (Rep - 1942 03 11) A Gene
Autry picture.  This is the only one in which they appeared eventhough they had been working on the Melody Ranch radio shows with out billing as the Jimmy Wakely Trio.
3 - Song of the Wasteland (Mon - 1947 06 06) A Jimmy Wakely picture in which the singing group was billed as the Saddle Pals.

Searching for information

From: Dorothy Allen
Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 1:19 PM
Searching for information on my cousin Leck Brown, a friend/neighbor of Roy Rogers. Leck and his wife, Christine, owned a ranch next to or near Roy Rogers. Roy got Leck and Christine into the cowboy movies, possible in the late 1940's or early 50's. Leck used screen names of Pete Brown, Leck Brown, Cyril Brown and Brownie. (Leck also owned a plumbing business under the name of “Brownie’s.)  Leck’s brother, Jim, told me that Leck was in the Stuntmen’s Hall of Fame. Christine sang and yodeled and was billed as “Sweetheart of the Pioneers.” Jim also gave me copies of several of their publicity stills, but he didn’t know which movies they were for. The only movie he could remember was “Bullwhup”, and mentioned a  studio called “Sunset Productions”. It is very possible that Leck and Christine may have appeared in some of Roy Roger’s pictures, perhaps as stuntman or extras. I would be happy to share the photos in hopes that someone might be able to help identify the movies.

The last correspondence I had with Leck was in 1978. His address at that time was:
5136 Ave L-
Lancaster, CA 93534
I would be very grateful for any information or suggestions you might have to help me find this information. Thank you for your time.

He is not listed in the Stuntmen's Hall of Fame; there are no movie credits for him. Also no film credits for Christine that would match her age. And, there is no movie listed as "Bullwhup."

Much like John Wayne's admiration of Harry Carey Sr. and why Wayne used Harry Carey Jr. in some of his pictures. Also, Harry Sr. appeared in three Wayne pictures.

Singing with the Sons of the Pioneers, and many other groups, is a favorite item in many performers memory and / or resume.  When different artists are booked for a show in a location they can say they "worked with," "sang with" or "performed with" such and such an act but it is only in the general sense.  They were never part of the group itself even if they did an impromptu song together.  In this case Leona Baker may well have shared the stage with the Sons of the Pioneers at some early point in their careers but she never worked with them as a group. They were strictly male and the only notable female to record with them was Dale Evans.
Being on the same stage in the same town on the same day and time with the Sons of the PIoners does not mean you worked with them in the basic sense.
As it is there are more people "who sang with" the Sons of the Pioneers at one time or another than places where George Washington slept.
As far as the Baker Sisters there are several sites on the web for information - just enter the name in Google search.

My question for you ... What made you think the mask was yellow since all the Starrett's were shot in black and white?
