Mac Hedges "Last Buckaroo" Back in Print

Your support of my Western Music Network launch in 2002/2003 was much appreciated. Unfortunately, we could not find a large enough audience to sustain the economics of keeping it up and running. I continue in my efforts to promote the heritage of Western Culture, and am pleased to announce that I have partnered with Mac Hedges to bring back to the publishing world.
Mac's wonderful novel, "Last Buckaroo."
The story of bringing Last Buckaroo back to print is documented on our website www.lastbuckaroo.com. I hope you will consider telling your Internet audience about the return of this book. Gibbs Smith, the original publisher did not do much, so there are many that have never even had the chance to read it. Our friend and buckaroo, Mac Hedges, is more than willing to spin an interview, and probably throw in a new story or two. Mac's e-mail is  last-buckaroo@sbcglobal.net.
Many Thanks

TRIVIA: Who said it??? Frankly, I don't like publicity. I always remember something that David Belasco said and had incorporated in the contracts of his stars. His theory was, "Never let yourself be seen in public unless they pay for it". To me, that makes sense. The most glamorous, the most fascinating star our business ever had was Garbo,  Why? Because she kept herself from the public. Each member of the audience had his own idea of what she was really like. But take the other stars of today. There is no mystery about them. The public knows what kind of toothpaste they use, whether they sleep in men's pajamas and every intimate fact of their lives. When I read publicity about them, I can tell just which press agent they employ.

Because of Cassidy's popularity with children, Boyd, as alter ego "Hoppy," would become a hugely sought-after endorsement figure, first appearing on an Aladdin lunchbox in 1950. Sales of the Hoppy lunchbox, which represented the first such container to carry the image of a popular character, skyrocketed to 600,000 units in the year of its introduction - 12 times Aladdin's total lunchbox sales for the previous year.
B star to mainstream actor

B-Western stars who had non western careers subsequent to their B-western work. This is not a quiz question, but a comment and query. Several B-western stars started off in nonwestern movies, often as romantic leading men.  Three who come to mind are John(ny) Mac Brown, Allan Lane and Charles Starrett.  With the end of their B career, they had few if any opportunities in mainstream features. Tim Holt, perhaps the best actor in the group, never could quite break out of B-westerns, although he made some extremely good mainstream pictures. The only one I could think of, excepting John Wayne who is 'sui generis,' is Bob Steele.  In the mid-40s, as his B career was winding down, Steele appeared in mainline movies or A-westerns on a fairly regular basis in small, but sometimes pivotal, roles beginning with “The Big Sleep”.  [I have seen him in the important role of Curley in “Of Mice and Men” (1939), but it was then about seven years before he did ‘Sleep’.] Can you mavens of the B-western come up with any other star who was able to do this?  Specifically I am excluding TV work or strictly voiceover.

Wild Bill Elliott's horse in the comics

From: mike newton <Front_row_kid>
Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2008 3:02:58 PM
A while back you had a question in your trivia section about Wild Bill Elliott's horse in the comics. You had the correct answer in quoting Douglas Nye's pamplet on the great western stars.  It was "Stormy." A few other respondents wrote in to say "Thunder."  Thunder was the name of Red Ryder's horse and of course Elliott played Red Ryder in the movies.  In the comics, he was Wild Bill Elliott, who rode from town and town on Stormy as your typical white hat hero.  He did not have any special designation as marshal or federal deputy as did Rocky Lane in his comics. I recall seeing Elliott in a personal appearance in 1952 in my hometown of Concord, N.H.  He was there to promote the "Jimmy Fund" which was for childhood cancer and probably polio as well. He was dressed in western clothes but did not have his famous reversed holster gunbelt with him. Golly, what if there had been any outlaws around.  I asked him where his horse Stormy was.  I didn't know he
had any other horses. I was familiar only with his comic book horse. At the time, he was making Monogram westerns in which he rode nondescript horses without names. He replied, "I keep him in a stable out in Hollywood." They passed out small photos of Wild Bill with a "Jimmy Fund" promotion on the back. It has seen a few years but I still have it carefully preserved in my scrapbook on cowboy stars.

Lyrics for Nellybelle; Looking for complete lyrics and record
From: LewmarBenton
Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 6:49 PM
I have searched the internet for quite a while trying to find the lyrics for a song sung by Pat Brady (from the Roy Rogers Show and The Sons of the Pioneers). The recording was on an old 78 rpm record when I had it as a child during the 1950's. It was the song of why Pat was driving "Nellybelle" the jeep. I know most of you are going to say there was no such item but I can give you some of the lyrics to show it was real:
It started: I've got a yarn I'd like to spin, if you don't care I'll start right in; It's about the meanest hoss I ever knew I got aboard that honriest brute  That ever jumped out from a chute
And with every jump that critter tossed a shoe.  Well I grabbed some horn. And I grabbed some hair  I really grabbed most anywhere The way he screamed and..........
And a cyclone hit the seat where I was sat They picked me up the doctor said They had to tie me up in bed I had.....................  Well my feet went flat ? My teeth fell out. My feet went flat ?
And I got the gout. I finally wound up in a padded cell. I'm alright now
But I'm telling you With breaking broncs boy I am through. From here on out I'm driving Nellybelle. Nellybelle, Nellybelle, let me tell you why I'm driving Nellybelle
That's about what I can remember. Does anyone have a recollection of hearing that song or do you know where I can find a copy?
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the information on the lyrics to the song about Nellybelle. I was able to go to the web site and actually listen to the recording as I remember it back in 1955. I had a copy of the song but I must admit I probably bought it for the song The Ballad of Davy Crockett. I didn't have a coonskin cap but I did have a Davy Crockett t-shirt which I can prove by some old home movies. I played both sides of the record and at that time I could sing all of the words to both songs. I had just about given up finding anyone who remembered the song or anything about it until I got your e-mail. Just for your information there is a copy of the record with the cover on sale on e-bay for the next day or two. I really am not a collector of memoriabilia but I love to sing old songs and that prompted my search for the song about Nellybelle. My dad used to play the guitar and sing songs he learned as a child listening to some of the old country stars in Talmadge, Ohio and also songs he learned while in the Navy in the Pacific during WWII. I always loved the silly songs and memorized quite a few. Recently I have started searching for these old songs on the internet and have found most but am lacking a few. Thanks for solving the mystery about Nellybelle which was a song of my era not one dad sang. Again thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

The actor known as George GABBY Hayes, named Gabby in the Roy Rogers' films after he left the Hoppy series as Windy Halliday, appeared in Gene Autry's MELODY RANCH as Pop Laramie. Before he became "Gabby" and was just George Hayes he appeared in Gene Autry's TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS as Doc Parker. That role was next taken over by Earle Hodgins in GUNS AND GUITARS.

Trivia:  What is the very unusual oddity regarding the Allan Lane movie
SUNDOWN IN SANTA FE?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for November 6, 2008
From: Bobby Copeland
Answer: The movie was to originally star  Monte Hale. However, a horse fall broke Monte's arm and he was unable to continue.  Since some riding footage had already been filmed, Republic made a few script changes, allowing Rocky to wear a Monte Hale-styled shirt and leave his regular mount Blackjack behind while.

This movie was originally a Monte Hale feature...Mr. Hale fractured his arm shortly after filming began...Good Ole Republic quickly turned it into a Rocky Lane movie..Rocky had to wear the same clothes Monte wore in some earlly scenes in order to match the scenes already filmed.  Thus, making this the only Rocky Lane movie (I think) that he wore a costume other than his usual jeans and striped shirt which he did wear after a few scenes was completed...This is another good question from Bobby and I hope it's a good answer..

Sadly, Cliff Edwards fell on hard times in the latter part of his career. (Reportedly, Walt Disney directed his Disneyland Records division to produce the now classic Ukulele Ike Sings Again LP to provide Edwards with some income.) Alcoholism and drug addiction led to financial and health problems, and Edwards entered a Hollywood convalescent hospital in 1969, where he died a pauper in 1971. (Ironically Edwards died on July 17, the 16th anniversary of the opening of Disneyland, where his immortal performance of "When You Wish Upon a Star" still echoes through the entryway of Sleeping Beauty Castle on a continuous loop.)
The Disney company had quietly been paying Edwards' medical expenses, and even offered to pay for his funeral. In light of Disney's magnanimous support of their "Jiminy," the funeral was instead paid for by the Actors' Fund of America (which had also aided Edwards) and the Motion Picture and Television Relief Fund. A spokesman for the Actors' Fund, Iggie Wolfington, said at the time, " "I can't praise [Walt] Disney Productions enough for the way they continued over the years to look out for Mr. Edwards' well-being.

Buttermilk - Dale Evans horse

Buttermilk (1941-1972) was a light buckskin Quarter Horse made famous in American Western films with his owner/rider, cowgirl star Dale Evans.  The horse was ridden by Dale in a 1950s television series with her husband Roy Rogers who rode his Golden Palomino, "Trigger." Both horses were extremely popular and became a marketing success with cast iron and plastic replicas, lamps, and dozens of other products purchased by adults and children alike.  After Buttermilk died in 1972, his hide was stretched over a plaster likeness and put on display at the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Victorville, California which has since been relocated to Branson, Missouri.

The movie is the full 73-minute version in vivid color and is not to be confused with a poor quality 60-minute black-and-white version that is circulating on the Internet. More details can be obtained by going to http://iOffer.com and searching for offer 73381601
I bought a copy and I can tell you that the DVD comes with absolutely no frills. The disc is shipped in a plain unmarked mailing envelope without artwork or a case, but beggars can't be choosers. Apparently, the source for this DVD-R is a VHS tape recorded from a late night TV broadcast on Los Angeles station KABC-TV7 in the 1980s, so the image quality is the same as a VHS tape. However, I was pleasantly surprised how good the movie looks. The commercials have been removed and I give the quality at least a "B" grade.

He appeared in over 150 movies mostly B's you probably seen him a dozen times in old B-Westerns. As far as I know he really was a Texan. So by goodness someone named him Tex (not Tex Ritter). He bore a starking resembelance to one of the giants of west. He appeared as character actor, a face in the bar scenes, walking down streets, stagecoach driver mostly without a speaking part. Name this son of Texas.

Tex Cooper, born in Texas in the 1800's and died in 1951. You usually saw him in the saloon, at a shoot out or where a gossip session was being held. Hardly ever got known. Was married to one of the munchkins from Wizard of Oz.

He was usually seen dressed in black clothes with white piping, hat included.  He looked like Buffalo Bill Cody down to the mustache and goatee.  He even appeared as Cody in at least two movies.  One with Lash LaRue and the other with Tom Mix.  TEX COOPER  (1876-1951).  He entered his film career in 1916.

Ken Jones, co-author of "Heroes, Heavies and Sagebrush" provides some biographical information on Tex Cooper. Cooper was born in Texas in 1876, he was one of the most picturesque characters in western films. He appeared in many films as a person on street or in the crowd. Resembling Buffalo Bill, he worked for him from 1892 through Europe and USA. He also portrayed Buffalo Bill in the Movies.

Stanley Andrews was the original "Old Ranger"
In 1930, Death Valley Days began an 15-year run on the radio.  By 1941, it was a standard in every American home with school-age boys running when the familiar bugle call came over the radio. Old Ranger - the grizzled old prospector who hosted the show. The stories centered on real-life stories of the legends and lore of the great Southwestern wasteland.

Lindy was not the name of the original Champion. Lindy was a trained horse that toured with Gene. He was sometimes used to do tricks in Gene's movies. Lindy joined Gene about 2-3 years after Gene's first movie. The original Champ had 3 white stockings. Lindy had four.

The setting was in a tavern.  The only thing I remember about the show was that Clayton Moore appeared as the Lone Ranger.  He had no spoken lines and was seen standing by the bar.  I'd like to know if anyone remembers this program and whether video of the show is available.

Their was a bar scene and when Roy Rogers came on they switch to a campfire scene because he did not want be associated with alcohol at the end they wished
John Wayne good luck and a speedy recovery. This was during the time Mr. Wayne was dealing with stomach cancer. Grayson this has been along time ago and my memory could be faulty.

Name some the richest western stars, and their approximate net worth? You can also name some that faired not so well?
Partial Answer
Gene Autry amassed a fortune from real estate, music publishing, movies, major league baseball club, radio and television at one time prior to his death in 1997, it was estimated that his estate was worth 200-250 million dollars. Roy Rogers also did rather well through his movies, radio and television, comics and personal appearances, product endorsments and at the time of his death IRS claimed that his estate was valued at over 100 million. Randolph Scott made his fortune in the movies, real estate and oil wells.
Ken Maynard ended up in a travel trailer, an admitted alcoholic.

The 'Cisco Kid' character is based on O. Henry's "Heart of The West" book of Western short stories, published in 1907, which was in turn based on legends around Austin, Texas of gambler and gunman Ben Thompson.
At least one Cisco Kid feature film was made during the Silent Era. Fox Studios made a series of Cisco Kid sound features in the 30s, starring Warner Baxter [1889-1951] and Cesar Romero [1907-94], both pairing with Chris-Pin Martin [1893-1953] as sidekick 'Gordito'. The low-budget studio Monogram Pictures made a series of Cisco Kid features in the 1940s starring Duncan Renaldo [1904-80] and Gilbert Roland [1905-94]. They too shared a sidekick, this time Martin Garralaga [1894-1981].
Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo [1880-1961] were paired at United Artists

Stoney Brooke and Lullaby Joslin who called themselves The Three Mesquiters. Guinn Williams as Tuscon and Al St. John as Stoney wasmade by Normandy.
So my answer is Al St. John.

Stanford Jolley, Rex Lease, Emmett Lynn, Francis McDonald, Lee Morgan, Zon Murray, Buddy Roosevelt, Gene Roth, Glenn Strange, Forrest Taylor and Pierce Lyden...Name this Golden Gem of a movie.
