Mac Hedges "Last Buckaroo" Back in Print
Your support of my Western Music Network launch in 2002/2003 was much appreciated. Unfortunately, we could not find a large enough audience to sustain the economics of keeping it up and running. I continue in my efforts to promote the heritage of Western Culture, and am pleased to announce that I have partnered with Mac Hedges to bring back to the publishing world.
Mac's wonderful novel, "Last Buckaroo."
The story of bringing Last Buckaroo back to print is documented on our website www.lastbuckaroo.com. I hope you will consider telling your Internet audience about the return of this book. Gibbs Smith, the original publisher did not do much, so there are many that have never even had the chance to read it. Our friend and buckaroo, Mac Hedges, is more than willing to spin an interview, and probably throw in a new story or two. Mac's e-mail is  last-buckaroo@sbcglobal.net.
Many Thanks

The answer for Dec 31 question is, Wanderer of the Wasteland, 1924, starring Jack Holt father of Tim Holt.  Film makers worked with color from the beginning even Edison, Technicolor 1 1917, Technicolor 2 process in 1922. This was the process used in the production of Toll of the Sea, the first general released film in color, followed by Wanderer of the Wasteland 1924, from a 1923 western novel by Zane Grey. The film is believed to be lost. 35mm cemented bi-pack technicolor print survived until the 1960s in the hands of Irvin Willat. Willat,   reported in 1971 that his print had decomposed and turned into jelly. After his death, his daughter told that he cried for three hours, after he  realized the movie was lost. His former wife Billie Dove was in the movie. Irvin Willat was the director of the movie. This information was gleaned from Wikipedia.

Joan Crawford appeared with most  of the a list stars in Hollywood. In Ben-Hur 1925 she was an extra in the crowd along with Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Lillian Gish, Marion Davies just to name a few. In this movie Cliff Lyons and Tom Tyler are credited as chariot drivers, I thought this was interesting. My answer is Tim McCoy and Johnny Mack Brown, she appeared
with Johnny in westerns and non westerns.

Think the two you are referring to would be Tim McCoy,WINNERS OF THE WILDERNESS ( 1927 ), LAW OF THE RANGE (1928 ) and Johnny Mack Brown, MONTANA MOON ( 1930 ).  She also starred with Tom Keene in TIDE OF EMPIRE ( 1929 ).  In the movie JOHNNY GUITAR ( 1954 ) there were several western stars who were in it, Ward Bond, Scott Brady, and Ben Cooper.

John Wayne
The medal crafted by the United States Mint has on one side John Wayne riding on horseback, and the other side has a portrait of Wayne with the words, "John Wayne, American." This Congressional Gold Medal was presented to the family of John Wayne in a ceremony held on March 6, 1980 at the United States Capitol. This medal is now at the John Wayne Museum in Winterset, Iowa. Copies were made and sold in large numbers to the public. On June 9, 1980, Wayne was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter (at whose inaugural ball Wayne had appeared "as a member of the loyal opposition", as Wayne described it in his speech to the gathering). Thus Wayne received the two highest civilian decorations awarded by the United States government.

TRIVIA: What were the initials on Hoppy's belt buckle?
Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for December 24, 2008
Answer: B. B. (for Bill Boyd)
Re: CowboyPal Trivia for December 24, 2008

From: Mel Ugel
Sent: Wednesday, December 24, 2008 2:51 PM
THE BELT: Hoppy's 3" belt was cut straight, not curved as was later practice. Originally the 1" billet (or tongue) was overly long and went past the end of the main belt. When buckled, it went almost all the way over to the first cartridge loop. It was this way from 1935 until it was shortened in 1936, as seen in TRAIL DUST, so that the silver tip came even with the end of the wide belt. This would cause trouble years later because even though Boyd remained reasonably trim, by the 1950s he was thicker and the silver tip would not even pass through the silver keeper. A very distinctive touch on this belt is a single round silver spot just in front of and below the right cartridge loops. The loops of white calf were laced through slots and were not sewn as was more commonly done. The main belt was edged with 3/16" white lace.
THE DROPS: Unlike the drop slots in most B-western holster sets which were part of the main belt, Hoppy's were separate and were sewed behind the main belt so that the white lace of the belt would continue across. The drops with the undulating contour on the outside edges and an open window in the center were the most dramatic part of the outfit. Dramatic, but not very practical. The opening allowed Hoppy's striped pants to show through for a nice effect. The problem is that the drops were weak and got distorted and floppy. Boyd did not like this and had carved leather patches sewed behind the drops to close the hole as seen later in 1940 in 3 MEN FROM TEXAS. The drops had white lace on the front and back edges, and each had a round spot near the top and a smaller heart placed lower below the round spot.
TIE DOWNS: In the beginning the holsters had conventional tiedowns that needed to be tied. In PARTNERS OF THE PLAINS (1938), we see that the tiedowns now had a ring and hook affair that fastened near the skirt for easy on, easy off. When the drops were stiffened with the patches, the tiedowns were removed.

This prolific director of early westerns began at Universal in 1925 with western shorts, eventually graduating to feature westerns, and finally to a wide range of movies. His early westerns were mostly action packed and well mounted, working with the likes of Art Acord, Hoot Gibson and Harry Carey. However, in the 41 years from 1929 to 1970, the year of his final film, he only made three more westerns. Who was this director?

With war in the wind, he joined the Naval Reserve and became a Navy flier in 1942, leaving his film career behind for the duration of the war. Assigned to the carrier Essex in the Pacific, Morris shot down seven Japanese planes and contributed to the sinking of five ships. He was awarded four Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Medals. The Three Mesquiteers

I am trying to track down a Three Mesquiteers movie.  It starred John Wayne.  The plot was about a young man that had poached a deer and was arrested.  He had a sister that was the love interest.  The young man escapes from jail and there is a manhunt.  Are you familiar with this film.  The reason I ask is it very similar to how my grandfather was killed in the line of duty in Powell, Wyoming in 1939.  I am interested in getting a copy of the movie so I can compare the plot and do some research.  Thank you for your assistance.

I believe the movie in question is WYOMING OUTLAW, and the young man arrested was played by Don "Red" Barry. Barry's family in the movie, was going through very hard economic times so he went out, rustled and killed a steer to feed his family, consequently he becomes a fugitive from the law. Dave Sharpe appears also in this film and he is the one who shoots Barry at the end of the film.

The answer for Dec. 18 Trigger and Trigger Jr. Age.  One source gives Trigger's birth year as 1932, other sources give 1934. Trigger died in 1965 so his age would have been 31 or 33.
Trigger Jr. was born in 1941, died in 1969, his age at death was 28. Sense the weather is bad, I did more research on Trigger and there's more than what meets the eye. Most of us notice,
while watching the movies that their was a difference in the looks of the horses Roy rode.
I read an article by Joel "Ducth" Dortch with pictures of Roy and different palomino horses, along with pictures of saddles. Go to www.happytrails.org/trigger.html I think this is a sanctioned Roy Rogers site.

Foaled: 1941 Gender: Stallion Blood Lines: Tennessee Walker Registered: Tennessee Walking Horse as 'Allens Gold Zephyr' Number 431975 and Registered: PHBA Association and
Registered: Palomino Horse Association Number 129. His sire was Barker's Moonbeam and his dam was Fisher's Gray Maud. He was bred by C. O. Barker, of Readyville, Tennessee. Barker's Moonbeam was sired by Golden Sunshine whose dam was Golden Lady. All were palominos. Trigger Jr had no connection with old Trigger's blood lines but he carried on the 'Trigger' name. Educated at Columbia University and Carnegie Tech, he embarked upon an acting career, first with a Maine stock company, then on Broadway. He played in a  hit comedy series  in New York, then toured with the production for several seasons. In 1928, he was brought to films as a young leading man, appearing in "A"-list productions. By 1930, however, he was having trouble securing work, that is, until he changed his name.
Name this western star and the hit comedy series he made in New York.
