Black StallionThis page is devoted to the mounts of our Saturday matinee idols.
Two outstanding equine's of this era were "Trigger " and "Champion " ridden respectively by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Almost as well known was "Topper" with William Boyd portraying "Hopalong Cassidy" as his rider. One of the most popular sayin's in the early fifties was "Hi Yo Silver, Away___" ridden by Clayton Moore as the "Lone Ranger " was his mount "Silver".
"Champion" was Gene Autry's beautiful stallion for twenty-three years in the movies and TV. Once after the chestnut with the white blaze and stockings had decorated the stage at a personal appearance, Gene Autry said, "Well, now that Champ has done his act, it's time for me to do one."
Gene, said he may have nuzzled his horse but he didn't kiss him. "I can take a joke, but it bothered old Champ."
" Trigger" originally named "Golden Cloud" appeared in "Adventures of Robin Hood" ridden by Olivia De Havilland, before being acquired by Roy. The palomino stallion was ridden for Roy Roger's first starring role in Under the Western Stars (1939). When the studio boss threatened to take "Trigger " away. Roy told him sorry but he'd already bought the horse for $2,500. Trigger, appeared in all of Roy's movies and TV series. He died in 1965, lived to ripe old horse age of 33.
