Joe Konnyu The Phantom Empire serial From: Betty Stalcup Sent: Sunday, October 18, 2009 11:01 PM Was the 1935 Gene Autry sci-fi movie, The Phantom Empire filmed in color or black and white? Re: The Phantom Empire serial From: "Leonard Freeman" Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 9:54 PM Actually ALL the movie serials were shot in B/W... a few were colorized later in the game for TV --notably Zombies of the Stratosphere where Leonard Nimoy makes his film debut ... but in their original theater release form there were no color serials. Phantom Empire was originally to have starred Ken Maynard, following up his Mystery Mountain serial... but Ken ticked off Nat Levine so, that he was dropped... and Gene, who had his functional "screen test" in the middle of Ken Maynard's "In Old Santa Fe" (and was an extra in Mystery Mountain) got the lead.. and the rest is history. Gene always appreciated Ken Maynard, and years later when Ken was an alcholic invalid, living in a trailer, Gene anonymously supported him. Len Freeman Re: The Phantom Empire serial From: CowboyPal - Joe Konnyu Betty, In short the answer is Phantom Empire serial procduced at Mascot Pictures was shot in B/W (Black and White) in (1935), with Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette and Frankie Darro was the brain child of Nat Levine head of Mascot who loved the idea and approved the production. ![]() |
