Popular western author William Colt MacDonald wrote a story called "Law of the 45's" in 1935. This was the genesis of the three characters known as Tuscon Smith, Stoney Brooke and Lullaby Joslin who called themselves the Three Mesquiteers. The first picture using two of the characters of "Law of the 45's" starred Guinn "Big Boy" Williams as Tuscon Smith and Al St. John as Stoney Martin was made by Normandy Films. The next was RKO's version titled "Powdersmoke Range" the leads for this all-star cast was Harry Carey as Tuscon Smith,Hoot Gibson as Stoney Brooke, and Guinn Williams this time as Lullaby Joslin. Other western stars included on this title were Bob Steele, Boots Mallory, Tom Tyler, William Farnum, Wally Wales, William Desmond, Buzz Barton, Art Mix, Buffalo Bill, Jr. Buddy Roosevelt, Franklyn Farnum. Billed on the posters as the Barnum and Bailey(circus) of Westerns. Republic secured the rights in 1936 and really got the series moving in the next two years as they cranked out sixteen Mesquiteer adventures with Robert (Bob) Livingston as Stoney Brooke, Ray "Crash" Coorigan as Tuscon Smith and Max Terhune as Lullaby Joslin with the exception of two episodes Syd Saylor played Lullaby in the first of the series "Three Mesquiteers" and in the tenth titled "Trigger Trio" Ralph Byrd replaced Robert Livingston who was ailing. This catapulted all three to the ranks of major stars at Republic. With Bob Livingston as the wise-cracking, devil may care saddle-ace. Ray Corrigan saving Bob's bacon and with Max Terhune with his puppet "Elmer" providing comedy relief. Besides the original three without a doubt the greatest western star in the 20th Century also took a turn as Stoney Brooke that was none other than John Wayne, who made eight Mesquiteer features in 1937 and 1938. After his hit film "Stagecoach" Wayne left the series. Robert Livingston returned in 1939 for another seven films as the lead, with Duncan Renaldo as Tuscon and Raymond Hatton as Rusty Josliny, Bob Steele as Tuscon  replaced Duncan Renaldo who was Rico and Rufe Davis as Lullaby subbed for Raymond Hatton. The combined output from '39 to '41 with Livingston as lead was fourteen adventures. Followed then by Tom Tyler as Stoney for seven more with Steele and Davis. The last seven were Tyler as Stoney, Steele as Tuscon and Jimmy Dodd (later to become the head Mousketeer for Disney's Mousketeer Club on TV) as Lullaby.

Republic Pictures produced (51) Three Mesquiteers westerns from 1936-1943, most were less than (1 hr), known as two-reelers.
